What is a neck lift?

A neck lift, also known as a cervicoplasty or platysmoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at rejuvenating the appearance of the neck, helping individuals achieve a more defined profile.

The neck is one of the first areas to show signs of aging, often characterised by loose, sagging skin, excess fat deposits, and prominent muscle bands. A surgical neck lift effectively addresses these concerns by removing excess skin, tightening the underlying muscles, and repositioning or removing fat deposits, resulting in a more sculpted and rejuvenated neck contour.

Should I undergo a neck lift?

A neck lift is a good procedure for anyone who wants to tighten and rejuvenate any sagging skin on the neck.

During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your skin and neck anatomy, and determine whether you are a good candidate for a neck lift.

A neck lift can treat any of the following issues:

  • Loose, sagging skin
  • Excess fat deposits in the neck
  • "Turkey wattle"
  • Prominent muscle bands
  • Neck folds

Beautifully defined neck.

What happens during the procedure?

During the procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will make discreet incisions, carefully hidden within natural creases or behind the ears, to minimise visible scarring. Through these incisions, the underlying muscles are tightened and repositioned, excess fat is removed or sculpted, and any surplus skin is carefully trimmed. This precise surgical technique restores a smoother, more defined neck appearance.

A neck lift can be tailored to address specific concerns, such as a double chin, jowls, or visible muscle bands. It can also be combined with other procedures, such as a liposuction, facelift, or chin augmentation, for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Dr. Gino Vissers will work closely with you to understand your individual goals and develop a personalised treatment plan that best suits your needs.

What to expect after a neck lift?

Recovery after a neck lift involves some downtime. Patients will need to take about a week off from work to rest and recover. Expect some swelling and bruising that will build over the first few days, then diminish, and slowly fade over the next 1-2 weeks.

A dressing will be in place following your surgery, and you will be seen by Dr. Gino Vissers within the first few days of your surgery to change the dressing. Discomfort will be minimal and can be relieved with pain medication. Most patients are back to full activity within 3 weeks. It may take up to a few months before the swelling has completely settled.

Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.

FAQ

  • What are the most common reasons for a neck lift?

Most people choose to have neck lift surgery to get rid of excess skin and fat in the neck, or to get a rid of muscle bands in their neck.

  • Will I need to loose weight before having a neck lift?

It would be best if you had a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 30 and ideally below 28 to get the best possible results from neck lift surgery. Patients with a body mass index over 30 will not be suitable for a neck lift.

  • How long do the results last?

Results of a neck lift typically last for ±10 years. Patients in good health can expect a neck lift to last a long time. However, keep in mind that your body does continue to age. So just as you aged before your neck lift, you will continue to age after your surgery.

If desired, Dr. Gino Vissers can perform a “touch-up” neck lift years following your initial neck lift.

  • Can I get a neck lift without an operation?

Yes. If you would like to have a neck rejuvenation but no surgery, you may want to have a look at our non-surgical treatment options including Morpheus and FaceTite.
