Chaperone Policy

At Dr. Gino Vissers' practice, we are committed to providing a safe and comfortable environment for all our patients during consultations, examinations, and procedures. We adhere to General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines concerning the use of chaperones to ensure patient dignity and confidentiality.

1. Purpose of the Chaperone Policy:

The purpose of this Chaperone Policy is to maintain the highest standard of patient care, respect patient dignity, and protect patient rights during any intimate or sensitive examinations or procedures.

2. Definition of a Chaperone:

A chaperone is an individual who is present during a consultation, examination, or procedure to observe and provide support and reassurance to the patient. Chaperones can be clinical or non-clinical staff, depending on the nature of the appointment.

3. When a Chaperone may be Required:

A chaperone may be required during certain consultations, examinations, or procedures, including but not limited to:

- Intimate examinations, such as breast, genital, or rectal examinations.

- Examinations or procedures involving sensitive areas of the body.

- When a patient requests a chaperone.

- If the clinician deems it appropriate or necessary for the patient's comfort and well-being.

4. Patient Choice and Consent:

Patients have the right to request a chaperone during any examination or procedure. Similarly, patients have the right to decline the presence of a chaperone. Our practice respects and upholds patient choice, and we will never insist on the presence of a chaperone if the patient declines.

5. Providing a Chaperone:

Our practice will make every effort to provide a chaperone upon the patient's request. The chaperone will be appropriately trained and sensitive to the patient's needs and will act as a witness to the examination or procedure.

6. Chaperone Availability:

While we strive to make chaperones available, there may be instances where a chaperone is not immediately available due to staffing constraints. In such cases, we will reschedule the examination or procedure to a mutually convenient time when a chaperone can be present.

7. Respect for Patient Privacy and Confidentiality:

Chaperones are bound by strict confidentiality and will not discuss the details of the examination or procedure with anyone except the patient and authorized healthcare personnel involved in the patient's care.

8. Training and Guidance:

All staff members acting as chaperones receive appropriate training and guidance on their role, patient dignity, and maintaining confidentiality.

9. Patient Feedback and Concerns:

We value patient feedback and take concerns seriously. If a patient feels uncomfortable or has any concerns about the use of a chaperone, we encourage them to discuss it with the clinician or practice management. Patient feedback helps us improve our services and ensures that we continue to provide the best possible care.

10. Review of the Chaperone Policy:

This Chaperone Policy is regularly reviewed to ensure compliance with GMC guidelines and the changing needs of our patients.
