What is liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide and can target areas with stubborn fat. It is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body to improve body contours and create a more sculpted appearance.

Liposuction can be performed on various areas of the body, including: neck and chin, abdomen, flanks (love handles), hips, thighs, lower legs, arms, and back

Liposuction is not a weight loss solution or a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. It is best suited for individuals close to their ideal body weight who have localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Should I undergo liposuction?

A liposuction is a good procedure for anyone who wants to remove excess fat that has not responded to their best efforts with exercise and diet.

During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your anatomy and determine whether you are a good candidate for a liposuction.

Liposuction can treat any of the following issues:

  • Double chin
  • Bulging tummy
  • Excess fat on or around the buttocks or hips
  • Love handles
  • Fatty arms
  • Fatty knees or ankles
  • Low self-esteem and body image

What happens during the procedure?

The procedure is 100% customised to your body shape, and is typically performed under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and your preferences. At the beginning of the produce, Dr. Gino Vissers will inject a special fluid that will help reduce bleeding, swelling, and postoperative discomfort.

During the procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will make small incisions, that are hidden on strategically located places to target your fat deposits. A thin, hollow tube (called a cannula) is inserted through the incisions. The cannula is connected to a suction device that gently vacuums out excess fat cells from beneath the skin. Dr. Gino Vissers carefully maneuvers the cannula to sculpt and contour the treated area.

After the fat removal process, the incisions are closed with sutures, and the wounds will be covered with small dressings.

What to expect after liposuction?

Recovery after a liposuction typically involves some downtime. Patients with an office job will need to take about a week off from work to rest and recover. Expect some swelling and pain for a couple of days after surgery, and you will have prescription pain medication to help you stay comfortable in the early stages of healing. Soreness and swelling may last up to several weeks.

At the end of surgery, you will be placed in a compression garment that we provide. You will need to wear the garment provided for 6 weeks. We recommend that you start walking around as soon a possible to reduce swelling and to help prevent blood clots from forming in your legs. Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.

The final results of liposuction become more apparent as the swelling resolves and the body heals, typically within several months. It's important to follow post-operative instructions provided by Dr. Gino Vissers to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Liposuction can yield long-lasting improvements in body contours when combined with a healthy lifestyle and weight maintenance.
