Polynucleotides is an injectable medical aesthetic treatment that is designed to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. The treatment is typically used to address dark under-eye circles and signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.
How it works: injections with polynucleotides
Anaesthesia: topical anaesthesia
Recovery time: 1-2 days
Results: few weeks, with improvements up to months
Lasts: 6-12 months
Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA. They are found naturally in our body, and help regenerate and repair cells.
Polynucleotides boost skin health at a cellular level. They have the power to awaken your inner beauty and help you skin appear more radiant by improving skin tone and elasticity. When polynucleotides are injected into the skin, they stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which help to improve the texture and elasticity of the skin. Polynucleotides also enhance the skin's natural ability to retain moisture, resulting in a more hydrated and youthful appearance.
The polynucleotides also aid in wound healing and reduce inflammation, and can be a useful additive following surgery to reduce scarring.
Polynucleotides are for anyone who wants to stimulate their collagen and elastin production. Especially for people who want to improve the texture of their skin, scars or hair, polynucleotides might be beneficial.
During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your overall skin health and determine whether you are a good candidate for polynucleotides.
Polynucleotides can improve any of the following issues:
Polynucleotides work on a cellular level by interacting with the skin’s natural regenerative processes. They work through numerous mechanisms:
Polynucleotides, being long chains of nucleotides (DNA and RNA fragments), help stimulate the natural repair mechanisms in cells. When injected, they act as biological signals that encourage damaged cells to regenerate. This is crucial for repairing skin tissue, particularly in areas affected by ageing, sun damage, or surgery.
Polynucleotides stimulate fibroblasts, which are key cells responsible for collagen synthesis. Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm and smooth. By stimulating fibroblasts, polynucleotides help improve skin density, reduce wrinkles, and enhance skin texture.
Polynucleotides have anti-inflammatory properties, which help to calm irritated or inflamed skin. This makes them ideal for use in treatments after cosmetic procedures, where skin irritation or swelling may occur. By reducing inflammation, they help accelerate healing.
Polynucleotides act as hydrating agents, helping to retain moisture in the skin. They attract and hold water molecules. This makes them highly effective in restoring moisture balance.
In cosmetic treatments, these effects combine to rejuvenate the skin, enhance elasticity, reduce fine lines, and accelerate healing after surgical procedures or aesthetic treatments.
After undergoing polynucleotides injections, you can expect to experience various responses as your body initiates the natural healing process. It's important to keep in mind that individual reactions may vary, and some post-treatment effects are normal and expected. You may experience some mild discomfort or tenderness at the injection sites. This is normal and typically resolves within a few days. It's common to have swelling and minimal bruising at the injection sites, which are natural responses to the treatment. The swelling is often visible as many very tiny lumps in your skin. These effects are temporary and subside within one or two days.
As you will have tiny wounds from the injections, you cannot apply makeup for 24 to 48 hours. Your skin may also be more sensitive to sunlight following polynucleotides injections. It's essential to protect your skin from direct sun exposure and wear sunscreen when going outdoors. It's advisable to avoid intense physical activities, and saunas for a day or two after polynucleotides injections to minimise the risk of complications and allow the treated area to heal.
Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.
Polynucleotides stimulate tissue repair and rejuvenation gradually. While you may notice some initial improvements, the full effects of the treatment usually become more evident over several weeks to months as collagen production and tissue remodeling take place.
Depending on the treatment area and your skin quality, you may need a course of multiple polynucleotides injections to achieve optimal outcomes. Most of our patients require a course of three sessions to get the best outcome. Dr. Gino Vissers will discuss your personal recommended treatment plan during your consultation.
To maintain the results achieved with polynucleotides, Dr. Gino Vissers recommends periodic maintenance treatments, especially for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. The frequency of these "top-up" treatments varies from your skin quality and your desired results.
Typically, a polynucleotides treatment takes aound 30 minutes to complete. This timeframe includes an additional 30 minutes for the blood to be drawn and spun in the centrifuge, and topical numbing to be applied.
