What is a thigh lift?

A thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the thighs by reducing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying tissues.

The procedure consists of a combination of skin excision from the inner side of the thigh and liposuction. It is an effective solution for patients who have sagging or loose skin on their thighs, often caused by factors such as ageing or significant weight loss.

A thigh lift resolves the sagging, drooping skin and fat pockets that appear on the tight that cannot be corrected with diet or exercise. The result is a tighter, more toned appearance of your legs.

Should I undergo a thigh lift?

A thigh lift is a good procedure for anyone who has fat and skin excess on their thighs, and would like to improve their body contours.

During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your body composition, soft tissue excess, and overall physique to determine whether you are a good candidate for a thigh lift.

An thigh lift can treat any of the following issues:

  • Excess skin and fat on the thighs
  • Hygiene problems due to skin excess
  • Rubbing and irritated skin
  • Low self-esteem and body image

For younger patients who have resilient, flexible skin, other options such as liposuction or Bodytite may be indicated.

What happens during the procedure?

A thigh lift is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety during the procedure.

During the procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will use a combination of a skin excision along the inner side of the groin and thigh with liposuction to remove excess skin and fat from the thighs. This combination allows excellent results with minimal risk to damage important structures like vessels and nerves.

The underlying supportive tissues of the thigh are tightened and sutured together to provide better thigh shape and definition. The incisions are meticulously closed with dissolvable sutures, and surgical dressings are applied to support the healing process.

If needed, Dr. Gino Vissers can extend the surgery to the knee or even the lower leg to correct these areas as well.

What to expect after a thigh lift?

After thigh lift surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which are common and can be managed with pain medication and post-operative care. Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, although strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for 6 weeks as the wounds mend.

The results of a thigh lift are visible immediately after surgery, but the full results become more apparent as the swelling subsides and the body heals.

Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.

FAQ

  • Is a thigh lift painful?

It is normal to experience some discomfort following any surgery. A thigh lift is not different. However, Dr. Gino Vissers will provide pain medication and postoperative care to reduce the discomfort to a minimum.

  • Can you get rid of loose skin on the lower legs?

Yes. If needed, Dr. Gino Vissers can extend the surgery to the lower legs. However, this will result in a much larger and less appealing scar.

  • Will I need a thigh lift after weight loss?

This is a personal choice. If you lose a lot of weight over a short period of time, you may experience loose skin that does not disappear with diet and exercise. If you want to correct this, you may consider a thigh lift as part of your post-weight loss body contouring procedures.

  • What will the scar of a thigh lift look like?

The scar of a thigh lift will be located in the groin and will then run down on the inner side of your thigh. The size of the scar may be larger if Dr. Gino Vissers does an extended thigh lift.

  • When can I exercise again?

Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, although strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for 6 weeks as the wounds heal.
