What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to lift and reshape sagging breasts.

Over time, factors such as aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and gravity can cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape and position. The breast may become flat, thinned and sagging. A breast lift helps restore a more youthful and lifted appearance by removing excess skin, repositioning the nipple and areola, and tightening the surrounding breast tissue.

A breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation or reduction if desired. For patients who also wish to increase breast volume, implants can be inserted during the same procedure to enhance fullness and projection. Conversely, for those with excessively large breasts, a breast reduction may be performed in conjunction with the lift to achieve a more proportionate and lifted result.

Should I undergo a breast lift?

A breast lift is a good procedure for anyone who wants to lift and improve the shape of their breasts, but does not want a larger breast.

During your consultation, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your breast size, shape and degree of sagging, and determine whether you are a good candidate for a breast lift.

A breast lift can treat any of the following issues:

  • Droopy and sagging breasts
  • Downward-pointing nipples
  • Enlarged and stretched areola
  • Loss of breast volume following pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding
  • Asymmetric breasts

What happens during the procedure?

A breast lift is performed under general anaesthesia. There are several types of breast lifts that Dr. Gino Vissers performs, depending upon the degree of breast droopiness.

  • Doughnut breast lift: a mild breast lift for slightly sagging breasts. During this procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will make incisions around the nipple to remove a doughnut-shaped area of excess skin, and reshape the breast tissue. The scars will be hidden on the border of the areola.
  • Lollipop breast lift: during this procedure, Dr. Gino Vissers will make make an incision around the areola and a vertical incision to the crease.  Through these incisions, excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to achieve a more elevated and youthful contour. This is a good procedure for a moderate amount of sagging.
  • Anchor breast lift: the strongest breast lift for extensive sagging. During this procedure Dr. Gino Vissers will need to resect an important amount of excess skin to create a firmer breast. This will result in scar that will look like an anchor. The scar can be hidden within a bra or bathing suit.

What to expect after a breast lift?

Recovery after breast lift typically involves some downtime. Patients with an office job will need to take about a week off from work to rest and recover. Expect some swelling and pain for a couple of days after surgery, and you will have prescription pain medication to help you stay comfortable in the early stages of healing. Some mild swelling may last up to several weeks.

At the end of surgery, you will be placed in a medical bra that we provide. You will need to wear the bra provided for 6 weeks; you can not wear underwire bras during this time. You are not allowed to lift any heavy objects or to do intensive sports for 6 weeks, as to not damage your breast lift.

Dr. Gino Vissers will provide detailed post-operative instructions to promote optimal healing and ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.
