Fractional CO2 Laser
in Harley Street

The most powerful skin rejuvenation laser in London

Key facts

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is the gold-standard cosmetic procedure used to dramatically improve skin texture and tone. By using advanced laser technology to create microscopic "treatment zones" in the skin, the process stimulates deep-tissue regeneration and collagen production to reveal a smoother, tighter, and more youthful complexion.

How it works: fractional thermal ablation and collagen induction

Anaesthesia: topical numbing cream

Recovery time: 1-2 weeks

Results: initial glow after 10 days; full collagen remodelling at 3–6 months

Lasts: several years (with proper skincare and sun protection)

What is fractional CO2 laser?

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is a sophisticated laser treatment that targets both the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (deep layer). Unlike traditional "fully ablative" lasers, the "fractional" method delivers columns of laser energy while leaving surrounding tissue intact. This "bridge" of untreated skin allows for faster healing and reduced downtime while still achieving significant clinical results.

Our CO2 laser is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for structural skin concerns. It is most commonly used on the face, particularly around the eyes (the "laser blepharoplasty" effect) and mouth, but it is also highly effective for the neck and hands.

The treatment can be adjusted to the area that needs to be treated:

  • Light Resurfacing: For fine lines and minor pigment irregularities.
  • Medium Resurfacing: For deeper wrinkles, sun damage, and skin laxity.
  • Deep Resurfacing: For pronounced scarring (including acne scars) and significant skin tightening.

The deeper the treatment, the bigger the effect on the skin, but also the longer the recovery time.

Should I have fractional CO2 laser resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 laser is ideal for patients seeking more dramatic results than a standard peel or microneedling can provide. It is particularly effective for those looking to reset the skin’s texture and address deeper structural damage.

During your consultation at our Marylebone clinic, Dr. Gino Vissers will assess your  skin type and medical history to ensure the laser settings are perfectly calibrated for your safety and goals.

Fractional CO2 laser can improve any of the following issues:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Deep-set wrinkles and "smoker’s lines" around the mouth
  • Advanced sun damage and actinic keratosis
  • Acne scarring and surgical scars
  • Skin laxity and crepey texture under the eyes
  • Pigmentation and age spots
  • Overall skin tightening and pore reduction

How does fractional CO2 laser work?

The laser works by emitting a beam of CO2 energy that is pixelated into thousands of tiny shafts of light. These shafts penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, causing controlled thermal damage. This triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response, replacing old, damaged cells with fresh, healthy tissue and a surge of new collagen.

A laser treatment by Dr. Gino Vissers will consist of the following steps:

  1. Skin Preparation: The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and a potent topical anaesthetic is applied to ensure maximum comfort during the procedure.
  2. Laser Application: Dr. Gino Vissers uses a precision handpiece to deliver the fractional energy. The settings are bespoke to your specific skin thickness and concern.
  3. Thermal Stimulation: As the laser passes over the skin, you may feel a warm, prickly sensation. The "fractional" nature ensures the skin stays stable during the process.
  4. Aftercare: Immediately following the laser, a soothing recovery balm is applied to aid recovery.

What to expect after fractional CO2 laser?

Because this is a transformative treatment, the skin requires a dedicated healing period. Immediately after the procedure, the skin will feel like a moderate sunburn: warm, red, and slightly swollen.

Over the next 3 to 5 days, the "fractional dots" will begin to bronze and eventually peel away. It is vital not to pick or scrub the skin during this stage. By day 7 to 10, the old skin has typically shed, revealing a pink, fresh, and exceptionally smooth layer underneath.

Sun protection is non-negotiable following a CO2 laser. Your new skin will be sensitive to UV light, and a broad-spectrum (SPF 50) must be worn daily to protect your investment and prevent hyperpigmentation. While the surface heals quickly, the collagen will continue to tighten and improve for up to six months after your session.

FAQ

  • Does fractional CO2 laser hurt?

During the treatment, the product may sting or tingle slightly. This feeling will subside after just a few seconds. Following the first pass of chemical peel slight numbing will occur, so you will be comfortable.

  • What skin types can have fractional CO2 laser?

CO2 lasers are highly effective but carry higher risks for darker skin tones. Dr. Gino Vissers offers safe protocols for a range of skin types, though some Fitzpatrick types may require pre-treatment skin conditioning.

  • How is CO2 laser different from Morpheus8?

While Morpheus8 uses radiofrequency needles to tighten skin from within, the CO2 laser "resurfaces" the exterior texture. They are often used in combination for the ultimate "non-surgical" facelift.

  • How many laser treatments do I need?

Many patients achieve their desired outcome in just one session. However, for deep acne scarring or very advanced wrinkles, a series of 2–3 treatments spaced several months apart may be recommended.
